POLITICAL LECTURE

COngress of South African Students was established in June 1979 ad a national organization to represent the interests of black school students in the wake of the Soweto uprising. COSAS organized students from secondary and high school. As well as technical, teacher training and correspondence colleges. Soon after their formation, the organization set up branches in the Eastern Cape, Western Cape, Transvaal, Orange Free State and Natal. This organization was established to campaign the interests of black school students, COSAS is the first organization to adopt the freedom charter. Other students organizations also assisted COSAS with establishing its branches in their areas.

COSAS first president was Cde Ephraim Mogale who was African National Congress member and was later to be convicted of furthering the aims of African National Congress, at the time of its formation the African National Congress was banned along other liberation movement under the unlawful Act. A guiding principle for COSAS was the view that the African National Congress was authentic liberation movement of South Africa.

In first two years COSAS took up two commemorative campaigns that authorities as ANC-supporting; the 1979 hanging of uMkhonto weSizwe (MK) guerrilla Cde Solomon (Kalusha) Mahlangu and centenary of Zulu victory over British troops at Isandhlwana.

We us COSAS members we must join the African National Congress if we have 18 years and above, but if you have 14 years and above you can join ANC Youth League and YCL-SA, if you Anti-ANC that means you dangerous and you will always oppose organizational aim to rescue African National Congress and its leadership. We as COSAS members and leadership we must start to learn that branch is the basic unity of the organization. Our tusk is to mobilize learners to join our progressive organization.

COSAS recognized that Bantu Education was aimed at controlling and indoctrinating youth and that could change only by transforming the country's entire political system. Although it was primarily education focused, COSAS identified the relationship between educational and social transformation in its statement of beliefs:

> Students must be organized through democratically elected SRC's that known as RCL's nowadays in the schools.
> Students must serve the community, we are members of society before we are students and thereby show that students can play a progressive role in a broad democratic alliance.
> In serving the community, there must be a recognition that students play only a limited role in the overall struggle.
>The duty of the students was to lend support to trade unions and community organizations.

In 1982, COSAS adopted the theme; "Students-worker action" and promoted the formation of youth congresses to serve the interests of young workers and unemployed youth. These facilitated cooperation between school students, young workers and the unemployed youth. This had the dual effect of drawing COSAS into issues which affected young workers and the unemployed youth and drawing the congresses into school-related struggles. The organization provided essential support to striking workers and community struggles around issues such as transport increases, rent hikes and other issues concerning society and students in general.

We as COSAS leadership here in Sebetwane our duty is to rescue t young teachers that we have in our school teachers like Mr Lenner and Ms Lepedi and conscioutise them so that they will assist us to take COSAS forward. Also Thuso Thebe they must conscioutise young teachers that side so that they will help you to take your sub-branch forward. But not leave struggle in their hands alone.

LEADERSHIP TRAINING

Good leadership do heard rumors but do not act on rumors, Leadership born not made, you not elected because you famous but you elected because you have capacity and capability to lead organization. Good leadership knows that agreement reached through a process of discussion and debate is effective than agreement reached without discussion and debate and for my understanding leadership must have followers. You cannot lead organization by using your commonsense, you must guided by constitution and other documents. You can use your commonsense but that cannot make political sense and you cannot lead organization as if you runs supermarket. We must not be dictatorship but leadership and we must be loyal to the organization because if you loyal to me is another story. Good leadership treat all members equally.

We cannot have leadership that go around night woke municipal mayer demand money and transport for their personal gains, which is misconduct, we cannot afford to lead by that type of leadership that is power hunger and abuse power. I hope we will never electe that type of leadership again because their nothing but trouble to the revolution, we cannot lead by counter revolution, leadership that cause havoc that type of leadership is threat to the revolution. I didn't mean to hurt anyone but this is nothing but truth we cannot afford to lead by the following comrades: Cde Malebogo Lethobeng and Cde Moreetse Mosimaneeng.

TATA Madiba said I quote  "our generation fought against apartheid regim. The generation of now have the responsibility to fight against liberation and defend democracy".

Tefu Mashamaeti

A former Kaizer Chiefs captain himself, Patrick Mabedi has a few insights on Amakhosi’s current captain, Tefu Mashamaite. What kind of leader does Mabedi think ‘Masha’ is, and does Mabedi think he deserves to retain the captain’s armband even when Khune is once again playing regularly for the team?Soccer Laduma: Tefu Mashamaite was made Kaizer Chiefs’ captain in the absence of Itumeleng Khune. What has been your impression of his performances as captain so far?Patrick Mabedi:He has done very well. I know he started slowly with his career at the team, but after being given a chance by Coach Baxter, he has proven that he is a good defender. He has done very well and his partnership with Mathoho has been excellent for the team and for him as a player. SL: What does it take it to be Kaizer Chiefs’ captain?PM:It is hard to be captain of a big brand like Chiefs. It needs someone who is a natural born leader who has a big heart. From what I have seen, Tefu has a big heart and he commands his teammates very well. You also need to understand the needs of the team and make sure you are results oriented.SL: Do you think Mashamaite has all those attributes?PM:As I have said, I think he has done very well as a player since joining the team and he has risen well in his position. He has proven that he can lead the team and work very well with the other players, which is very important if you are the captain. I think he has done very well. SL: How difficult is it being a captain when there are so many other top-class players in the team?PM:It's hard, not just at Chiefs but at any team. You have to communicate with all the players in the same way, whether they are a big name player or just a young guy. You have to be strong mentally, as well as mix and talk well with the players. SL: Do you think Chiefs would miss him if he decided not to re-sign with them after his contract expires in June?PM:Oh, yes! He has proven that they need him in the team and, knowing Chiefs, they will make sure that they keep him at the club. But if they don't hold on to him, it will be a big loss for the team.

Re-burial of Cde JB Marks

Descendants, friends and comrades
of the late African National
Congress (ANC) and South African
Communist Party (SACP) stalwart,
JB Marks, are paying homage to
him as they prepare to lay his
remains to rest in his home town
of Ventersdorp in the North West.
They have all gathered at the
family home for a valedictory
service on Sunday morning.
Marks’ reburial ceremony, which
will also be attended by President
Jacob Zuma, is expected to take
place at the Tshing Sports
Grounds later.
Halima Marks, the granddaughter
of the late ANC stalwart, says she
is grateful that the remains of her
grandfather will finally be laid to
rest in the country he fought for.
“From the Marks family, we are
grateful for what the government
has done, we are extremely happy
yet emotional,” says Halima.
Marks’ great granddaughter,
Emlynne Duarte (13), says she
feels proud to be related to the late
Marks.
“We are happy his remains are
brought back, because it is very
sad for someone to die away from
home,” says Duarte.
Marks passed away in 1972 in
Moscow, Russia.

Message of encouragement

I like to take this moment to encourage young people and older people.

We as people we must learn to be patient because patience paid. We must not fold our arms doing nothing. We must not let people to discourage us. We must always be positive so that things will be positive in our side, we must not be negative so that things will not be negative.

FAIL is first attempt in learning, we not fail because we stupid we fail because we not take our school work serious. We must study "SMART" not  "HARD" so that our school work will be smart not hard.

We must form study groups so that we will cover up what we taught and that can can make you to improve your performance and passing rate in general.

Our concerns as COSAS leadership

We as students leadership we must
rescue our members against
harassment and we must not let
teachers date learners, if teacher date
learner he/she must resign, if he/she
don't do that we can help her/him to
do so, we are not apologetic no one
must pay, now is time to act, if funds
that department of education is
allocating is not enough is not our
problem or our parents. We must act
whether teachers like us or not, we
must make our members happy not
teachers and we must correct this
things of suspension without warning
in our schools, I quote from freedom
charter "The doors of learning and
culture shall be opened, Education
shall be free, compulsory, universal
and equal for all children".

Open letter from the African National Congress to the Communist Party of Cuba Dear Comrade General Secretary of the CPC The African National Congress, its leadership and entire membership as well as supporters and people of South Africa would like to take this opportunity to renew the bonds of friendship between our two parties. The friendship between Communist the Party of Cuba (CPC) and the African National Congress (ANC) is as old as the struggle against imperialism in all facets - slavery, colonialism, neo-colonialism and apartheid. Our countries could never have been liberated if all peace-loving humanity was not on the same side.

The imperialist forces also formed alliances but were defeated because oppression of others cannot be justified by any means. The power of superior arms and wealth has their limitations for they are always employed to thwart progress. We particularly wish to acknowledge this friendship of progressive forces in this month of July, which marks the 61st Anniversary of the raid on the Moncada Barracks in 1953, a campaign that is to the Cuban revolution what the sabotage campaign was to the ANC in the 1960's at the beginning of the armed struggle against apartheid. We actually have one of our Umkhonto Wesizwe (MK) detachments named the Moncada Detachment. This is after throngs of young people especially students from all over South Africa joined the ANC and MK to fight the scourge in our country that was condemned as a crime against humanity by the United Nations. The friendship between the CPC and the ANC is not accidental.

When one considers that at some point in history the British colonised Cuba even for a brief period, it becomes clear that the bond between our peoples and parties was inevitable. Like Cuba, South Africa changed hands between the Dutch and British the same way Cuba did between the Brits and the Spanish. We are working very hard to educate our people about this bond and the trials and tribulations of the Cuban revolution. In a tradition began by the likes of Jose Marti, our brother and comrade Fidel Castro and members of the PCC managed to lead Cuba to freedom. From as early as 1962, despite difficulties created by the imperialist forces, Cuba offered South Africans much needed military and academic training. Our people have benefited - and continue to do so - from the medical services that Cuba has always excelled in. In fact, your country and government have assisted thousands of people on the African continent and elsewhere in this regard. In all our formations including the trade union movements in both our countries, we have weathered the storms. The women of Cuba led by the Federacion de las Mujeres Cubanas (FMC) joined hands with women of South Africa led by Women's Section of the ANC at the United Nations International Conference of Women in Mexico in 1975. At this conference the condemnation of apartheid as a crime against humanity was reiterated and the suspension of the racist regime from the General Assembly of the UN was sealed.

Together as members of the Women's International Democratic Federation (WIDF) that was based in Berlin, capital of the German Democratic Republic (GDR), our women fought for the peace, equality and development for all humanity. Our youth also joined forces in the World Federation of Democratic Youth (WFDY) and popularised the struggle in Southern Africa, educated the world on the justness of armed struggle and the support Cuba offered to Angola when the latter was forced into a war of attrition by the most powerful country, the United States and its proxy, racist South Africa. They continue to call it a civil war but we know that they helped the forces that could not liberate Angola as they were tribally based and lacked the mass support from the majority of the people of that country. The imperialist forces and South Africa were only interested in the continued exploitation of the wealth of Angola - in this regard, the oil and diamonds were what they were after. Democracy and self-determination for the people of Angola was secondary - if they could not topple the victorious MPLA and install a puppet regime, they were bent on destroying the country completely. However, in the true spirit of internationalism, the Cuban people honoured the request by Agostino Neto, the founding president of liberated Angola to assist them in their moment of need. We do not forget the great battle of Cuito Canavale where the myth of the invincibility of the might of racist South Africa was shuttered once and for all. The military skills of the cadres of both SWAPO and ANC trained by the Cubans sent the racists packing.

The "Stalin Organ" or Katusha was so devastating it sent them running helter skelter all over the place. The South African Defense Force (SADF) was forced out and had to face the nation - albeit the white minority - to explain the body bags to parents and loved ones of the young men who had fallen illegally outside the borders of their country. Their grip on illegally occupied Namibia slipped away and the way was paved for the liberation of South Africa. The ANC was absolved by history as the unrelenting force for liberation and peace. In our quest to strengthen and consolidate our democracy, we still rely on the PCC's willingness and ability to hold our hand against all odds. The ANC will continue to work closely with your party collaborating in all aspects of development and peace. As Vladimir I Lenin stated, "taking power is easy the challenge is keeping it." Demands on our 20-year-old democracy are many and varied.

The glaring inequality and abject poverty of the majority of South Africans did not come in 1994. This is the legacy of centuries of oppression and deprivation. Among our people the protracted Cuban struggle against the US economic blockade is seen as a proud display of unfettered patriotism. We unreservedly support the international democratic forces for the unconditional liberation of the Cuban Five from United States prisons. Liberated Cuba has never faltered; instead it is growing in stature and proving its enemies wrong. Increasingly braver prouder nations are rallying around Cuba by increasing trade and encouraging other peace-loving countries to do likewise will remain primary. We salute countries like the Russian Federation, which has recently made important steps towards economic collaboration with Cuba.

About postponed of congress

Congress of COSAS Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Region has been postponed until further notice, to organise ourselves before Regional congress and visit branches, to take COSAS from Region leve to branch level by doing so checking visibility and energetic of branches, because we want to have organised, vibrant ane energetic branches within our Region, Siyanqoba we COSAS, learners in action to move COSAS forward and build unity spirit within COSAS.
